Assorted Kinds Of Fall Arrest Anchors

Posted by in Roofing | Comments

Fall arrest anchors protect workers that are put in a situation where an accident would be devastating. Every year, many people die or are seriously injured because they did not have the right safety system installed. There are cases where the equipment was installed, but not being used. The types that are available are designed for the various commercial and residential types of jobs.

Window washing equipment is often connected to roof anchors. People that work in skyscrapers in large metropolitan areas often see the crews being lowered to clean windows or replace glass. While this is very scary to the observers, the workers that make sure the equipment is well maintained can do this work without fear.

One type of system is called the constant force post system. This system provides ongoing resistance, but allows fairly free movement. The primary idea of this system is to have continuous resistance to slow a descent, rather than using a shock absorbing lanyard that still jars when the worker reaches the end of the rope. This system spreads the shock throughout all the equipment.

The freestanding constant force post is designed for temporary installation. This device provides the same principle safety that the constant force post provides, but can be removed after the job is completed. These can be used on roofs with less than a five-degree pitch. Using weights made from rubber, the system provides heavy friction resistance if a accident occurs.

The ridge system gives workers freedom of movement. For sloping roofs, the problem is often having to constantly unhook and attach to the next post. With the ridge system, the anchor will slide up and down the ridge, basically following the worker. If the worker tumbles, the system provides the same resistance as any other system.

Tieback anchors are more permanent and traditional fall safety mechanisms. They are typically installed with two eyes that can be use for safety lines and equipment. These are very common in suspension work. The application is often used with window washers or repair crews that must be lowered on mechanical rigs and boatswain chairs.

The combination of roof anchors with safety equipment is what saves lives. Crews that work commercial construction understand how easy it is to slip or tumble. For those that are simply cleaning their gutters, chimneys or working on the roof at home, the same dangerous conditions apply. There are several types of systems that are designed for home use. Many serious injuries can be prevented by having these systems installed. If a person falls from a ladder, the harness and lanyard can easily save his or her life.

The types of Fall Arrest Anchors are designed based on the conditions they will be used. Whether the worker needs freedom of movement, solid connection, or to attach other equipment, they all provide the safety and security needed. The temporary systems are just as effective as the permanent installations. Anytime a worker is working up high, his or her safety should be the top priority.
