Eavestrough Repair As Part Of Regular Home Maintenance

Posted by in Roofing | Comments

Many things such as a damp basement or damp crumbling walls can be caused by something as simple as blocked gutters or downpipes. It is important to carry out basic eavestrough repair for peace of mind that these larger problems are not building unseen. These unobtrusive parts of our property do the very important job of seeing that rainwater is drained harmlessly away from our property.

The damage that water can cause gets increasingly worse if it is left. Continual leaks into or down the outside of the property can wear away paint and cause erosion. Any area that remains damp will begin to suffer from mould or rot which can be very expensive to treat.

As well as this any water trapped in the system through the winter may freeze causing additional damage to the guttering itself. It is clear that the additional problems can all lead to very large and expensive repairs.Proper maintenance of the eavestroughs and drainage system just twice a year will avoid these other major problems.

The fall is the worst time as leaves will collect in the channels and block them hindering the water flow. They may also block the down pipe openings which will cause flooding of the channels. So before the winter they should be checked and cleared. Then again towards the end of spring they can be checked again and painted too if this is required.

The first thing you need to do is remove all debris from the channels which can be done by hand wearing some heavy duty work gloves. It is also important to clear leaves and debris from under the eaves which could also fall into the channeling. A hose is a good tool to remove the small remaining fragments and can also be used to spray and power wash the down pipes. This way there should be nothing to start a future blockage.

Of course there could be damage to the actual system and if this is your first proper clean then it is more likely. Any split or broken pipes will need to be replaced. Joints that are found to be leaking will need to be resealed. It is also important to make sure that the drainage system is correctly mounted to allow clear water flow. It should be straight and flat. Any sagging sections need to be supported properly to avoid the water collecting in these areas. There needs to be a clear passage for all the water to follow.

If it is discovered that the pipes and channelling are in a real bad state of repair then it may be time to call in the professionals to replace the whole system. Although this may seem an unnecessary cost, it could save you a great deal in prevention of damp problems in the future. A little money invested now will be a very wise move.
