Important Considerations Regarding Roof Shingle Choices

Posted by in Roofing | Comments

Obviously the main function of a roof is to protect the home from outside weather. There are a number of different materials that can be used for the roof of a house, including quite a few choices of shingles. These include asphalt or asphalt composite shingles, clay or concrete tiles and shingles, wood shake shingles, and fairly exotic materials like slate.

Important considerations for choosing a roofing material are how durable that material is and cost. You want a roof that will last a long time, at least twenty or more years. Some materials come with guarantees for much longer time periods.

When building a house or choosing a roof for that house, some people are particularly concerned with the environmental implications of the project. They will want to keep the carbon footprint of job as low as possible, and they will think about things like biodegradability of the materials used when they need to be replaced. For this reason they might choose asphalt shingles made of natural materials, for example.

The thickness of the shingles to be used is also a consideration for some people. Part of this has to do with how durable the roof will be and thus how long the roof will last. In addition, roofs with a lot of texture simply look good, and so the appearance of the roof and the home is usually a major consideration.

Another important point that many people overlook when making a choice is the resistance to fire. Although organic shingles are good for the environment, they are less resistant to fire. Some are also prone to accelerated delaminating and thus they will require more frequent replacement.

Some of the best shingles on the market these days are made of different layers of materials fused together with asphalt. These shingles can last a very long time, and it is common for them to have guarantees of fifty years or even lifetime guarantees. They are also painted with color differences to make the roof appear to have a lot of texture, so their appearance is quite good.
