Protect Yourself And Your Employees While Working On High Structures Using Fall Arrest Anchors

Posted by in Roofing | Comments

When people have jobs that have them scale heights that most of us would rather not do, they need to obtain fall arrest anchor to help ensure their safety. A part of what they do involves some great risks that they could stumble, or slip, and fall to the ground far below them that could cause serious injury or death. Over the years certain equipment has been developed and enhanced to give them some measure of protection in case something unfortunate occurs. Some of this equipment includes horizontal lifeline systems, ladder safety devices, roof anchors, portable barrier devices, full body harnesses, and safety nets.

Roofers are constantly working on sloped roofs of all angles that present certain dangers, especially if the roof has a deep pitch to it. In order to protect themselves they can get devices that can either be permanently anchored if they know they will be returning every so often to do work, or they can get reusable ones that they can take from job to job. Both are affixed over the roofs edge and the worker attaches a safety line to in in case they slip.

Ladder Safety Systems are devices that have a cable running up and down the ladder. The worker wears a harness that has a locking mechanism attached to the harness and the cable. If they fall, the locking mechanism engages and stops the worker after a few inches. These are made for virtually all ladder heights.

Portable barrier systems are installed along the sides of a roof top and act like a fence to protect workers who are working along that edge. They are anchored to the roof and provides a worker with a sturdy structure that will stop her if she trips or stumbles.

There are those who work high on beams, or on bridges, where if they were to slip, thy would drop straight down to the ground. The installation of safety nets is designed to catch them much like a trapeze net would catch an acrobatic performer in the circus. While these are good, they should be used with other safety equipment meant to stop the fall at the beginning.

Horizontal safety devices come in handy when one is working along a scaffolding or a closely against a wall. They are very much like the ladder safety devices, because a short safety line is attached to a cable running along the wall. However, there is no locking mechanism and it is the shortness of the safety line that stops one from dropping far.

Full body harnesses can work in any situation, but they are specifically needed for those who scale heights. They attach to a roping system much like a mountain climber would use.

Since all different scenarios will face a worker out in the field, most of this gear should be a standard part of roofing, construction, and window washing equipment supplies. This way, when a need arises for certain fall arrest anchors, they will be there when the workers need them.
