Safeguard Against Fires

Posted by in Gutters | Comments

1. Ordinary materials found on the ground can easily ignite and spread fire. Even natural materials such as dead leaves and branches, bushes and dried grass found underneath trees which is adjacent to a property should be cleared out. These materials should be removed especially when the property is oriented north and west.

2. To prevent fire from igniting, deciduous trees and other vegetation with broad leaves oriented to the north and south is a good blockage.

3. To keep the ground, roof and walls damp, setting up sprinkles are ideal. Having petrol or diesel pump that would draw water from tanks should also be considered because it will prevent power failure or pressure loss.

4- Having a buffer zone by planting trees or plants keeping reasonable spaces between them is an ideal strategy. Lawn should be well cut as an additional measure.

5- Wooden fences and other wooden structures can catch fire easily, instead metal structures should be built around the property to avoid fire. Solid or paved driveway is another good step towards protection.

6- The use of fine mesh wire against windows and ventilation areas is recommended to prevent cinders or sparks. The chimney areas should be well guarded against possible sparks or burning coals and they should be periodically checked.

7. When it comes with the roof, check for loose tiles. Fix metal roofing has a good chance to withstand high velocity winds as well as roof types which has a low profile.

8- Pavements made up around the houses with solid stuff like concrete and slate are helpful in the protection of the structures.

9- Underground areas of a property should be protected with the sheets made of cement and asbestos to prevent fire. Undercover areas should be well guarded against fire.

10. Walls with cracks and open spaces can be cause to spread fire especially by the winds. Sealing of walls should be ensured to prevent fires.

11. Locate firefighting equipment where it is easily reachable and convenient for occupants to use.

13. Gutter cleaning should be carried on a regular basis.

14- Plenty of water should be made available by erecting hoses from a water tank through a main gate valve in case of need.

15. Erecting a solid masonry wall around the garden is a good idea for protection against fires.

16. When in the building phase of a garage, opt to orient it on the eastern side and well away from the property. Make sure to have a proper seal or lock systems on garage and on workshop doors.

17. A spacious pen or yard should be ensured to give maximum protection to farm animals.

18- Firewood should be stored away from the house and the store should be towards the east of the house.

19. There should be plenty of water available to extinguish a possible fire. The working of the hoses and pumps should be checked and they should be good in length.
